OK, a speculation. Samuel Bowers may have married Mary Cheney
daughter of Samuel Cheney and Hannah Hawkes of Boston despite the Pope genealogy of the Cheneys which says Mary filed an intention to marry James Mills in 1801. The city of Boston published their marriage records and they state that James Mills intentions were to Mary Clenny and the marriage record reads Mary Cleny. They are recorded to have been married by the Rev. Samuel Stillman who was the pastor at the First Baptist Church in Boston. The Mary Cheney and Samuel Bowers who married in 1805 were married by the Rev Thomas Baldwin of the second Baptist church in Boston, the same Reverend and the same church that married Mary's sister Nancy to Benjamin Gray in 1805. For names: Mary's 7th child was named Hannah, her 2d was Samuel. This is pure speculation. Mary Cheney could havebeen from Groton, but Samuel's father had a shop in Boston about 5 minutes walk from Samuel Cheney's school. Samuel worked there and became a shopkeeper in Machias. This endeavor failed however. As I say, a speculation.
