1861 Census, Parish of Daviot, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
This is John Moir Hardie b.1824 at Saphock in the parish of Fyvie, to John Hardie and Sarah McDonald m.1814 Daviot per the Old Parish Records.
The Statistical Account of Scotland 1791 for the parish of Daviot says it "extends to about 3 1/2 miles in length and 2 in breadth but several lands in the parishes of Chapel and Fyvie were in the end of the last century annexed to it quoad sacra". The lands at Saphock would probably have been in this part of the parish. For the purposes of worship the people in that part of Fyvie would have used the church at Daviot. Saphock is very close to the village of Daviot.
John Hardie’s baptism is recorded in the Episcopal records for Folla Rule.
Mary Chillas b.1845 was the daughter of James Chillas and Margaret Hardie m. 1845 Banchory Devenick, proclamation at Daviot. Mary lived at Candyglerach in the parish of Drumoak and died 1926 at her daughter’s home in Oyne. John Hardie is the uncle of Mary Chillas.
Mary Chillas had two illegitimate children:
1. Mary Chillas b. 1864 Daviot by James Troup. Mary married James Benzie, merchant at Pitmachie, Oyne.
2. Margaret Thomson Chillas b 1873, father unknown. Margaret married James Durno 1896, Oyne and died 1959 at Insch.
John Hardie went on to marry Jane Duncan b. 1840 to David Duncan and Margaret Chillas. Margaret Chillas was already an aunt to Mary Chillas as she was the sister of her father James Chillas.
I would welcome contact with anyone researching this family.
