My great grandfather, Hamilton James Chinnis, was born in Brunswick Co., NC about 1840 to, I believe, Benjamin Chinnis/Chinnirs (variant spellings) and his wife, Flora. I have a xerox copy of a letter Flora Chinnis wrote to her son, my great grandfather in 1877. In it she names him as her son and refers to 2 other children, John and Julia. Both "my" Hamilton and John moved from Brunswick Co., NC to near Charleston, SC in the 1860's, starting a large Charleston branch of the Chinnis Family. I believe, Benjamin and Flora Chinnis also had a daughter, Mary, and a son, Daniel, born in the 1830's/40's. I believe Hamilton James Chinnis' father, Benjamin (born about 1795-8) was the son of an earlier Benjamin Chinnis who was born perhaps 1765. According to the 1810 and 1820 Brunswick County, NC censuses, this first Benjamin Chinnis had 5 sons and 2 daughters born between 1785 and 1806. I believe the Bejamin who was born about 1765 had a brother, Michael. I went to Brunswick Co., NC many years ago and did some research. I have also searched census data. I would very much like to have any information on the various branches of the Brunswick Co. NC Chinnis Family and will be glad to share the information I have and whatever I later learn. I am getting back into genealogy after a long break.
