I am a descendant of Gilbert Christian, his son Robert Christian, a recruiting officer in 1732 during the Indian Wars of Augusta Co, VA, his son Col. Gilbert Christian of Sullivan Co, TN who served as a Lt. in the French & Indian War, Rev. War as a Major, & commander & Colonel of militia for Sullivan Co in numerous Indian Wars, his son Col. George Christian of Overton Co, TN, his son George Christian Jr, Circuit Court Clerk of Overton Co, his son Moses Elian Christian, his daughter Ruth Christian my gr grandmother & sister of Hubert Christian, my Gr, Gr Uncle who wrote an account of the descendants of Pioneer (Immigrant) Gilbert Christian. His claim that Gilbert was from Scotland was not based on primary research & is wrong but has been copied by people as gospel. There are no records of any Christian immigrating from Scotland. The Christian Family in the British Isles all descend from the Deemsters on the Isle of Man, including Gilbert who was born in Ireland. There is no proof of exactly when he was born or died although my Gr, Gr Uncle Hubert claimed it was 1680. That was a guess. Now his nephew Israel Christian also came to Augusta Co, VA where Gilbert's sons Robert, John, & William & daughter Mary settled. Gilbert, wife Margaret Richardson & the 4 children's immigration record is 1726. The deed in 1740 to the substantial land tract in Augusta County was in the name of his 3 sons Robert, John, & William. By the date of the deed Gilbert was most likely dead. Israel was a Dublin merchant prior to immigrating & carried on a merchant trade with the Indians etc in Virginia but like Gilbert, he sailed from Northern Ireland to America. Both Israel & Gilbert & family paid their own passage. Israel is recorded in correspondence as the nephew of Gilbert; in records as the cousin of Captain William Christian of Augusta (son of Gilbert the Immigrant);sonWilliam Christian's will in 1709. William is listed in his father Patricius's will dated 1784. Patricius died in 1787. There was a gap from 1784 when the will was written until his death in 1787. His children listed in his will were William & Mary. Patricius is named as Patrick in the Trinity College Dublin's records (Trinity is the Oxford of Ireland) as a student entering on May 5, 1665 as aged 16. He was listed by Trinity as the son of William Christian of the Isle of Man. It states that he studied under Mr. Whitehead in Lancashire, England prior to Trinity. He was listed as a scholar in 1667. He received an MA in 1672 & was a Senior Fellow while serving as a minister with various titles in numerous churches from 1672 to 1680. From 1680 until his death he seems to be minister of numerous churches in County Waterford again with various titles & neighboring counties as their minister. There is dispute of when he married Mary Nettles of a prominent well to do family in County Waterford (daughter of High Sheriff of Waterford, John Nettles) where he also purchased the estate Old Grange. Mary's will was recorded in 1720 but only the index listing has survived that there was a will. Old Grange was sold to the Christian cousin, William Christian who sold Ronaldsway on the Isle of Man, William "Illiam Dhome" Christian's estate. A cousin on the Isle of Man, Edward Christian of Sulby, (grandson of Patricius' uncle Deemster John Christian of Milntown) is listed in Patricius's will & he must have aided Patricius financially during his lifetime. The seal on the will was duly noted as being the Christian family crest from the Isle of Man. Some in America do not understand that the family crest of the Christian family had been in use for generations in the Isle of Man. I personally researched at: Trinity College Dublin's Library, Ireland's National Library in Dublin, the Church of Ireland (Protestant) Library in Dublin, the National Library & Archives in Douglas on the Isle of Man, and Lismore Cathedral in Lismore, Waterford where the Dean of the Cathedral pulled an old manuscript record book in Latin showing Patricius as a Prebendary of the Cathedral in the 1680's. He also pulled out a mink stole which had belonged to Fred Astaire's sister & wrapped it around my youngest daughter! (Big smile on her face). He told the story of how she married the duke whose castle is opposite the church cathedral & how Fred Astaire used to visit her & the church. We just missed a reception for Prince Charles at the Cathedral the Dean informed us. So, there is strong proof of Israel's relationship as nephew of Gilbert Christian; and strong proof of Israel being William Christian's son & Patricius Christian's grandson, and Patricius Christian as the son of William "Illiam Dhome" (Fair haired William) Christian, Hero of the Isle of Man.
