Mary Lou, good to hear from you.
William M. is proving to be more difficult than your William J.For now I cannot prove who his parents were, only who they weren't.I have been looking at some collateral people to try to discover William M.'s Chronister lineage, but so far have only found more tidbits to support the proof that Debra and I have already done.
I can prove that William M.'s wife is Margaret E. Napier. That is the only way I have seen her name spelled on the records that I have looked at."Marguerite" would be a french spelling of the name, though the family doesn't appear to be french.I have seen "Marguerite" on internet postings, but can't figure out where it came from, as I have found no record to support it.Therefore I don't use it.She is "Margaret" on all of the census. When signing her own name, she consistently wrote it simply as: "M. E. Chronister".Her tombstone also has "M. E. Chronister".
As you know, Margaret's father was an officer in the Union Army. His wife was Mary H. Vaughan. There were many Vaughans who also served, some as officers, and I believe a number of them are probably Mary's brothers or cousins. One of these, Reuben P., completed a questionnaire in 1912, and one of the witnesses to his signature was "Wm J Chronister".He gave his address as Moreland, Pope Co, which further supports our earlier conclusions that William J. stayed in Pope and was the son of Azariah.Another of the Vaughans, Stephen C., has an affidavit in 1890 from Mary H. Napier, who signs with a mark. The witness to her signature was "M. E. Chronister".Her address is given as Conway County, which also supports our earlier conclusions about the time period that William M. was in Conway County.
The pattern that I have noticed is that William Jackson Chronister, son of Azariah, always signed with his middle initial or wrote out his full middle name.William M. does not use a middle name or middle initial when he signs. The only thing I have that documents his middle initial as "M" is one and only one census listing. That is pretty flimsy, not convincing. The fact that he doesn't use an initial makes the search more difficult.
If you have turned up anything new, would love to hear it!
