I just happened to spot this series of messages as I was finishing up making copies of the latest series of messages on the Virginia Churchills. Thus, the genealogy prepared by W. G. Churchill of the Virginia Churchills originating with the immigrant William was fresh in my mind.
The immigrant William was baptized on 2 Dec 1649 in Saint Mary, North Aston, Oxfordshire, England. He first shows up in American records in 1674.His better-known wife is the widow Elizabeth Armistead, by whom he had his only son, Armistead. However, an entry in the Middlesex County order book for the year 1683 shows that he had a first wife named Mary. The entry reads, "December 20, 1683, William Churchill and Mary, his wife, came into court and acknowledged deed, etc."
According to "Genealogies of Virginia Families," Vol. 1, page 815, the eldest of his two daughters by the first marriage was probably Mary. The same source states that Mary married Capt. Roger Jones and had children Churchill Jones and Susannah Jones.
That the children of Capt. Roger Jones were indeed part of the Churchill family is shown by the will of the widow of Mary Jones's half-brother Armistead.Armistead's wife, Hannah Harrison, left a legacy to two of her grandchildren and to Churchill Jones, who is identified as "of Fauquier."Three of Armistead and Hannah's sons moved to Fauquier County.
Churchill Jones was more than a nephew to Hannah Harrison Churchill. In a compilation of information that I prepared for my own use (that is, my source is buried in my notes somewhere), I noted that Armistead and Hannah's daughter Judith married Churchill Jones on November 11, 1769.She later married John Blackburn.
I seem not to have recorded any information on Susannah Jones, though in view of the prominence of the William Churchill family there may well be information on her in Virginia sources.
