I am looking for descendants of the Clapton family of St.Mary's Street, Stamford, who were on the Census Returns from 1841 to 1881.
Cousins of mine descend from the Hewerdine family, also of Stamford. Henry Hewerdine was a baker, who began lodging with Frances Clapton, widow of James Clapton, a printer, who died in 1845. Henry then married Frances' daughter, Charlotte Clapton, and had a number of children by her, from whom my cousins descend.
Henry Hewerdine's father, John T Hewerdine was Governor of Stamford Gaol in the 1850s, living on St.Mary's Place. Near to him lived Jeremiah Clapton, who died in 1870.
Jeremiah Clapton began as Clerk to the Guardians, and later became an Alderman of Stamford, as well as the Superintendant Registrar on the 1861 Census, and Clerk to the Burials Committee. He was a brother to the above-mentioned James Clapton, printer.
Charlotte nee Clapton Hewerdine had brothers Isaac and Thomas.
