Again our confusion of having names duplicated within one family - and 'perhaps' the issue of 'out of wedlock' children.I don't see this issue discussed much on the forum.
There appears to be a marriage certificate from Lee Co. VA for Benjamin Franklin Clark and Ellen Clarkston Morris. I am finding it hard to obtain real data from Lee County VA but a trip to my local library may turn up some documentation. An article in the Lee Co Bicennential publication gives this Ben and Ellens marriage date as June 13, 1867 at the home of his mother, Catharine 'Cate' Clarkston, near Keokee, Lee County, VA by Minister William R Bailey.(Baileys are also my line). This article was submitted by Abbie Lee Cox and states she is a granddaughter of Susie Elizabeth Cathleen Clarkston and Soloman Cox --- Susie Elizabeth was a daughter of Ellen Clarkston and Benjamin.
In this situation we have Benjamin Franklin Clarkston (son of Catharine Clarkston) marrying Ellen Clarkston Morris, (daughter of John Clarkston and Sarah 'Sally' Mckinney)Benjamin and Ellen were cousins - a practice that was very common at that time.
We have a second Benjamin (Franklin or James) Clark/Bailey who was the son of El, Ellen or Elender Clark/ston. Our oral tradition says this Ben used both the Bailey and Clark name. This Ben is found on the 1870 and 1880 census records of Harlan County, KY with his Mother and a sister, Minty in the 1870 census and Nancy in the 1880 Census (this would be NANCY ARMINTA Clark/ston)
I have just found 'cousins' that support our oral tradition of these two different Ben Clarkstons - plus they have been able to give supporting verification to the idenity of some photo's found recently by Liz Langley. These photos belonged to my Great Grandmother, Rebecca Ann Clark/ston, a daughter of Kate or Cate Clark/ston.
New information says El lived and died in Harlan Co. KY at a place still known as El's Gap!I would welcome any information on the location of El's Gap.This has made my 10+ years search all worthwhile!I would WELCOME any information at all as Rebecca and Charles Bascom Bailey left the KY/VA area early in their marriage (no record found) and raised their family in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
