I found the marriage certificate of my great, great grandfather, Willis Campbell and his first wife, Peggy A. Cleek in the loose files at the Scott County, Virginia Courthouse in Gate City.
Willis Campbell (age 38) and Peggy Cleek (age 51) were married on 18 June 1856.The ceremony was performed by E.R. Herren. Both are listed as "single".
Willis Campbell is identified as the son of John & Mary Campbell and as being born in Surry Campbell, NC.
Peggy Cleek is identified as the daughter of Michael & Christina Cleek and as being born in Rockbridge County, VA.
For some reason, this information was never recorded in the Scott County Marriage Register and I found it by accident.
Willis and Peggy (Cleek) Campbell had two children:
1) Matilda "Mattie" Campbell was born in 1869 in Stickleyville (Lee County), VA and married George Lincoln Smith about 1886.
2) Charles Campbell was born in 1870 in Stickleyville (Lee County), VA and was a stonemason that settled and married in Wise County, VA.He later migrated west...possibly Indiana.
On 02 October 1872, Willis Campbell also married his second wife, Margaret Clark in Scott County, VA.On that marriage certificate, Willis is identified as a "widower".He had five children by his second marriage:
1) Polly Ann Campbell 2) Sarah Elizabeth Campbell married Benjamin Martin Dishner 3) Belle Campbell married Mr. Johnson, migrated to Pontiac, MI 4) John C. Campbell married Mary B. Long 5) Amada Jane Campbell
