John Wesley Johnson and Susan Cloninger Johnson lived in Polk County and Clay County, Tennessee. Somehow John W. wound up in Searcy, Arkansas and became a deputy sheriff then was killed in a gunfight. Susan Cloninger was definitely Cherokee. According to the family, she referred to herself as "Black Dutch." Her daughter Isabelle, who went by Rosalee, was my great-grandmother. There is an existing picture of her and she definitely looks Indian. I myself was told by Japanese that I look Oriental because my eyes are almond-shaped. My great-grandmother died in Hollow Rock, Tennessee around 1895 when my grandfather was an adolescent.
