Thanks Tom.Its a tough connection, but I don't see how it can't be solid for such a small town back then. I have my great grandfather Lester H. Clow's biography from the History of South Dakota. It's available on Rootsweb.I can send the address.Lester says his parents were John H. Clow and Catherine D. Smith. and that John H. Clow died in 1853 in Vermont.Catherine was 97 when the History was written in 1904.
I believe she's the same Dorothy Catherine Smith who's line is available on the website for "Clarks of Vermont, Quebec, and Iowa" (can send that address too)She's shown some places as Dorothy Catherine Smith and other places as Catherine Dorothy Smith. She's in the new 1880 census in Cook County Illinois (Chicago) at age 63 with a birth year of 1817 which matches the Clarks work, with two of her daughters, Etta Clow 30and Adda E. Clow 27.
Dorothy Catherine Smith Clow, or Catherine Smith Clow (1880 census) parents were Timothy Smith, and Mary Deal. Her paternal grandparents were John Smith and Catherine ?.Her maternal grandparents were Adam Deal and Dorothy Hutchinson.
Family lore is that the Clows are from Scotland...but who knows. When John died/was killed about 1853 Catherine baptized the kids in Philipsburg in April 1855 then moved to Paxton IL and then Chicago where she and her two s poinster daughters were Milliners and dressmakers. One daughter is said to have stayed in Highgate/philipsburg and married a man named Ross.
Lester H (Hardick or Hardwick?) Clow b.11/2/1843 moved to Illinois with his mother and sisters and married Adella Jane Taft on 9/3/1868.She was b. 1849 in Ridgeway, NY and died in childbirth1/5/1878.Lester and Adella's first child was Irma Clow b. 8-15-1869 She married Charles Raver. Their second child was Byron Lee Clow, my grandfather, born 12/25/1872.The Taft family Bible notes a third child Gracie Clow b. 2-5-1875 but the fmily has never heard of this child, perhaps a still birth or an early death. The Taft Bible also notes a Florence Adella Taft Clow born 12-24-78 (perhaps 77 to fit with Adella's death). That child was adopted out by Lester in Wisconsin and lost to the family. It is said that Byron looked for her and found her near death from cancer in Wisconsin in the 1920s and that she died without marrying or issue.
After Adella's death Lester remarried Delia Franck 8/8/1880 and they had children Franck Alice Clow, Doroty Iris Clow, Dudley Sebastion Clow, Louise Markham Clow, and Ruth Delia Clow.
Back to the earlier Clows, I believe the "John Claw" shown in Highgate in the printed 1790 census is clearly "John Clow" when you look at the hand written version of the census. He would be the John Clow, father of John Edward Clow, (these folks are also on the Clarks of Vermont website) and if the Clark information is correct tnd John E (not H) Clow was born in 1816, that makes him a better match for Catherine born in 1817.
John E Clow and Catherine Smith Clow's children are shown by the LDS folks to be Catherine Cornelia Clow b. 1838, Mary Hidelia Clow b 1839, Harriet Ellen Clow b 1850Lester Hardie (Hardick, Hardwick?)Clow b. 1843, Samuel Alfred Clow, and Harriet Adeline Clow b 1853,So, that would mean that the daughter who stayed behind in Highgate to marry a Ross would have been either Mary Hidelia, or Harriet Ellen.
Don't know if that helps anyone, have lots of downline since Byron Lee Clow.
