They are sons of George and Julian Underwood Cofer of Madison Co.,VA. This is what I have on them. If I can help let me know.
Ray,
Descendants of George Cofer
Generation No. 1
1.GEORGE 4 COFER(JOEL 3, THOMAS 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born Abt. 1781 in Culpepper Co VA, and died Bef. 1860 in Roane Co TN.He married JULIAN UNDERWOOD 22 May 1801 in Madison Co VA, daughter of JOEL UNDERWOOD and JOYCE.She was born Abt. 1784 in Madison Co VA, and died Abt. 1860 in Roane Co TN.
Notes for GEORGE COFER:
GEORGE COFER of Roane County, Tennessee
Hubert Cofer a descendant of George Cofer m Julian Underwood in Madison Co., VA. is an exact match 37 out of 37 marker DNA to a known descendant of Thomas Cofer d 1791 Culpepper Co., VA.

The George Cofer of Roane County does not appear on the 1814-1821 tax list for Roane County. The first evidence we have for George Cofer being in Roane County is an original paper found in the attic of the Roane County courthouse.
On 24 June 1824, George Cofer and Henry Liles signed a note to James Buckhannon for $3.37+. George Cofer signed the note (his handwriting is extremely good. Henry Liles made his mark.) The note was witnessed by Charles Henderson and due in two months. On 2 October 1824, James Buckhannon brought suit to collect this note. The case was set for trial 9 October 18 24 at which time Buckhannon obtained judgment for the amount of the note plus $1 court costs.
Roane County 1830 census, p. 61
George Cofer 40-50 (b1780-1790) 1female40-50 (b1780-1790)
1 male 10-15 (b. 1815-1820) 2 females10-15 (b 1815-1820 )
2 males 15-20(b 1810-1815)- 1 female20-30 (b. 1800-1810)
This is same George Cofer who lived in Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1820. Census information would indicate he is. The Roane County George would have been (as would his wife) 30-40 in 1820. The Rockingham County, N.C. George and his wife were in the 26-45 age brack et so th is could be the same one. For purpose of comparison, the Rockingham County, N.C. census date is here recorded:
George Cofer, age 26-45 (The Roane County George
3 males under 10 (b. 1810-1820)
1 male 10-16 (b. 1804-1810)
2 females under 10 (b. 1810-1820)
1 female 16-26 (b. 1794-1804)
1 female 26-45
would have been 30-40 in 1820 so could be the same one.)
(These three males would have been between 10 and 20 in 1830. Roane County George had three males between 10-20 in 1830)(This male would have been between 20-26 in
1830 and old enough to have been married or away from home.
(These females would have been 10-20 in 1830 George in Roane 1830 had two females this age. (This female would have been 26-36 in 1830 and no doubt married if she is a child of George's from the 1820. She could be a relative or house hold worker living with them - maybe near 26 and not a child. George's wife and between36-55 in 1830.
1840 Roane County census - The comparison of information on the 1820 Rockingham County, North Carolina, census and the Roane County, Tennessee 1830 census is too close to go unobserved. It certainly looks as though they could be one and the same family.
Living next door to Abraham Cofer in 1840 is Susan Bess and George Coffe r. It is ;confusing as there is a bracket drawn around the names "Sus an Bess" and "George Coffer." Possibly they lived in the same hous e. It is highly probable Susan is the sister of Abraham Cofer's wife. Susan would ha ve been 33 years os age in 1840, but is hard to interpret th is census whi ch is shown as follows:
Susan Bess) 1 male 5-10; 3 males 30-40; 1 male 50-60; 1 female5-1 0; 1 fe male 20-30; 1 female 30-40
George Coffer) No males 1 female 50-60
She is not the female 50-60 listed out by George Cofer's name. Susan Willis married James J. Best on 11 August 1825 in Roane County. She was William Willis' daughter, b. 3 January 1807, and the sister of Abraham Cofer's wife, Frances Malvina Willis. There is good reason for her to be living next door to Abraham and Frances Malvia Cofer. We know nothing of her children. We believe her husband, James J. Best, "left the county." He left no record in Roane. That is probably the reason she has no children younger than five. She is certainly young enough to have had. All of this is to determine which is George Cofer. Susan has to be the female 30-40. The female listed out by George Coffer's name must be the wife of George and he is the male 50-60 listed out from the name "Susan Bess."
The George in the 1830 Roane census was 26-45 so would be 36-55 in 1840 and would be in this 50-60 age bracket. So would his wife. Now as to his children:
He had three males and two females under ten in 1830. They w ou ld be 10 to 20 in 1840. where are they in 18407 There is only one ma le 5- 10 in the household who could be one of them. Where are the other tw o? Dead? We know Abraham Cofer had twelve children and only five survived. Did George lose two between 1830 and 1840? There is only one female 5- 10, by st retching it, could be one of the two he had in 1830. where is the other one? Who are these three males 30-40 living, evidently with Susan Bess, in 18407 Boarders? Although this is probably the same George cofer as the one in the 1830 Roane census, the information on the children will not tie in.
In 1850, George Cofer is shown living next door to Smith Phillips. Smi th Phillips marriedFrances Cofer. They all still live in the same neighborhood. The George Cofer we have been following would have been betwe en 60- 70 in 1850. He is shown on the 1850 Roane County census as follows:
Family 1574
George Coffer67 farmerb. Virginia (ca. 1783)
Julian50(female ) 60b. Virginia (ca.1790)
All of his children are gone. No doubt this is the same George Cofer we ha ve been tracing. He first appeared in Roane County in 1824 wh en he w as 41 years of age. He and his wife were both born in Virginia. It seems probable that he is the same George Cofer who was listed in the Rockingham County, North Carolina, 1820 census. Definitely this is a Virginia family. They had a sojourn through North Carolina. There are family ties at the same time in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.
It is not know when George Cofer died. Neither he nor his wife are listed in the 1860 census for Roane County. The estate records for Roane County between 1850-1860 have no mention of a George Cofer -
doing anything - dying included. There is an "every name" index for th is book. George Cofer owned no land in Roane County. He was not civic minded and left no record as having served as a juror or a justi ce of the peace.
I have found a deposition in a Roane Circuit Court case given by “George Cofer, age 66 ub 1847.”This is the third signature we have for him.His marriage bond in Madison Co., a paper after he came to Roane, and now this one.I will send you a copy of the deposition. Marilyn

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON COFER:
GEORGE W. AND JOSEPH COFER of Roane and Meigs Counties, Tennessee from M ar ilyn N McCluen compiled 11Jan 1979at Rockwood TN.
George W. and Joseph Cofer may have been sons of George and Julian C of er of Roane County. We have letter written around 1836 from my gr. g r. g r. grandmother Cooper to her son in Illinois that mentions G. W. a nd Joe C ofer. They are always mentioned together. On one occasion she sta ted th ey had been to her house but had gone back to Georgia. The Cooper f amily lived at Cooper's landing, very near the Cofers. G. W. was bo rn in 18 12 in North Carolina. Joseph was born in 1820 in Virginia. Th at is the on ly item that bothers the theory that they are brothers. If n ot brothers, t hey certainly were close cousins.
George W. Cofer married Julian Arnold in Roane County on 9 February 1 84 3. Notice his wife's name is the same as that of George Cofer's wif e. He n amed a child "Julian" but, of course, it is not known if it was f or his mo ther or for his wife, since both of them were named Julian. He n amed a chi ld Joseph - no doubt for his close associate. George and Joe "c ould" ha ve been two of the males shown on the 1840 census living with Sus an Bess a nd George Cofer. Notice I say "could." They were trucking back a nd for th to Georgia about this time.

JAMES T. COFER of Roane and Meiqs Counties, Tennessee
He stabbed Moses Winters in 1844. Absolom Adkisson and G. W. Cofer made bond for him, and he was in Meigs County in 1850.
James T. Cofer is not listed as head of a household in 1830 or 1840 Roane County census.
On 25 June 1844, William Hester went before the grand jury as a witness for the State and prosecutor in the case against James T. Cofer for stabbing Moses Withers.

When and where this Matilda and James T. Cofer were married is not know n. A James T. Cofer married Mary Pierse in Roane County on 31 December 1854. Walker Pierce was a neighbor of the Cofer family in Roane. Is Mary his daughter? Walker Pierce had a daughter named Mary, age 16, in the 18 50 Roane County census. Surely there is only one James T. Cofer. If so, what happened to Matilda he was living with in 1850 in Meigs County?
