Rev. Hartwig Cohen, possibly the son of Fishel & Sarah Cohen, possibly born in Europe, was the Rabbi at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, a Sephardi synagog in Charleston, S.C. 1818 to 1823. He died in Winnsboro, S.C., 12 Oct 1861 and is buried in the Coming Street Cemetery where there is a rather unique carved stone table. He married Deborah Marks, the dau. of Samuel Mendes Marks. This family was formerly the Marques family, descendants of Isaac Rodriguez Marques, a shipping magnate in New York in 1700. His son Jacob was b. 15 Mar 1699. Jacob's son Isaac went to Charleston.Jacob's sister Esther b. 21 may 1718married Lewis Gomez.Hartwig's daughter Frances A. Cohen, married Aaron Nathan Cohen. His parents may be Aaron & Anna Cohen, his sister Elizabeth. Anyone have any additional information? I think they're in Stern's book of early Sephardi families, but haven't been able to check.
