According to Our Coker Kin page 9:"Joseph, Charles and William Coker, brothers, emigrated from Somersetshire, England, in the early part of the seventeeth century to Roanoke, Virginia. (This ancient family dwelt in former ages at COKER in Somersetshire, to which place they were beholden for their name.)See Burke's Landed Gentry 187a and Debrett's Peerage, Baronatage, and Knightage 1907.
"These brothers emigrated from Virginia to the Pee Dee River near Darlington, South Carolina, about 1740.When the revolutionary War broke out, Charles and William took up arms for the Colonies., while Joseph remained faithful to the King, and being disliked by his neighbors and relatives, moved to North Carolina, and after the war, moved back to South Carolina."
"Charles and William removed to Tennessee with their families after the Revolutionary War and settled at Knoxville - each of these brothers had several children."
"William, our ancestor, had three children by his first wife, namely: John, Jonathan, and Cumberland, and one by his second wife, named William."
According to Our Coker Kin page 75 "Leonard son of William Coker lived on the south bank of Beaver Creek 1/4 mile above the mouth. After Girard Leiper Brown, his brother-in-law died, Leonard is said to have lived on Brown's land, Leonard had a son Joe, no other record."(this was referring to William "Buck" Coker.)
According to Our Coker Kin page 9 "William Coker, the second, our ancestor, was born in South Carolina near the Pee Dee River in 1765, and died and was buried in Polk County, Tennessee in 1850.He resided for many years in Monroe County and raised a large family of children. His first wife's name was Charles before their marriage, and by this union were born four children:Leaher, Margaret, Polly and Charles, the last named being our grandfather.By his second wife her maiden name Huffman, there were born the following children:Evaline, William, A. Doke, John H., Joseph, Sarah, Leonard, Eliza and James and Nancy. (13 in all)
(the above paragraph refers to William Coker, son of William Coker Sr.)
The above was the source for my information, however I feel as confused as anyone else does on these Cokers. Thanks for sharing the information on that will.Very interesting. All of those children were not listed in Our Coker Kin as you see above.
In the book "Our Coker Kin"it lists nine children of William "Buck" Coker:Joseph b. 1787 NC, Leonard b. 1790, Sallie, b. 1790, Katie, William (abt. 1799, Charles b. 1800, Edward b. 1801 TN, Jane, b. 1805, and Nancy.
That's all I can add to the discussion for now.
