As an update to my previous post, I checked out the LDS site and discovered that someone has done a lot of work on this branch of my family. I discovered that Earl was born in Palmer, NE area in 1878, the oldest of around 10 children of George Wilbur Colborn and Mary Eliza Leyde (Burke)Colborn. George was born in Ontario, Canada in 1852, died in Upland, CA in 1921. He was the son of Abraham Colborn, who was born in 1825 in Erie Cty. NY, moved to Canada, and married Mary Comfort in Blenheim, ONT. in 1849. There were about 9 children in that family, most of whom were born in Wisconsin. Abraham died in 1903 and is buried in Palmer NE. If anyone can help me fill in the gaps, I'd certainly appreciate it. Due to circumstances and prejudices of the times, my mother never knew her father, Earl Colborn. He had been 'institutionalized' in 1912, the year she was born, and she had always been told he had died before she was born. She found out the truth from one of her uncles just before she got married in 1937. As I understand, Earl lived (if you could call it that) at Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, CA until he died sometime in the '40's. Unfortunately, she never talked about him much to us, and it wasn't 'til after she died that I finally found out his name. I have some letters that he wrote to my grandmother when he first was confined, and a couple of letters his mother wrote to him, which is how I got this far.
