Coldiron Family Genealogy
December 2003 Update
Research and compilation of family records has continued during the past year.Interest in the family history and genealogy is still very strong, with many families doing their "family tree."Thanks to all of you for your interest and for submitting new data and history to our Coldiron database.
Coldiron Genealogy Records Status – One of the best ways to measure our progress in compiling the families is to review the records status. At the time the Coldiron Family Genealogybook was published in 1998, we had recorded 6,034 descendants of Johan Georg Kalteisen (George Coldiron), with 3,174 spouses, for a total family count of 9,210.With the additional research and data submissions in the last six years, we now have 11,972 descendants with 6,631 spouses, for a total family of 18,605.Hundreds of hours have been spent checking and verifying the accuracy of these family records against court house records and state vital statistics. The Social Security Death Index available via the internet has also been a big help in obtaining and certifying death records. Our work continues, and we thank all of you for your interest and support in compiling the records.
Coldiron Family GenealogyBook – With all the new records compiled over the last six years, its time to begin work on updating the book. This will be a total update, integrating all the records in the first book with the recent data compiled. The end result will be a totally revised set of Family Group Records. If I worked on it full time, it would take more than a year to complete.Since I can't work full time because of other commitments, a reasonable expectation might be publication in 2005/2006.Its not too early to review your family data to see if I have all the latest changes and revisions. You can forward data and information to me at any time.
Congratulations to George Washington Coldiron on his 100th birthday!George celebrated this wonderful event on 29 Nov 2003 with family and friends in Middletown, OH.George is the son of James Coldiron and Matilda Alice Blanton. He was born in Crab Orchard, KY and raised his family near the little community of Turkeytown, near Crab Orchard. We believe he is the eldest living Coldiron, and we wish him many more good years.
Coldiron Family Reunions – We had our fifth annual reunion at our house in Brooksville, FL on 1 March with 29 attendees. We especially enjoyed meeting the first time attendees: Mary Ruth Coldiron Berg, Geraldine (Geri) Tatum, Theresa Coldiron, and Harvey and Delores Peters. We all had a great time swapping stories and exchanging data.I also attended the Coldiron reunion in London, KY on 15 June with about 45 other attendees.Rodney and Barbara Bledsoe of London, KY coordinate this reunion. The Coldiron/Johnson reunion was held in Leesburg, OH on 3 August, planned by Ron and Dianna (Coldiron) Coffey.
Research Trips –(1) In June, visited the Kentucky counties of Laurel, Powell, Pulaski, Harlan, and Bell – reviewing court house marriage records, library cemetery records, and KY birth records.Visited local cemeteries and took photos of Coldiron related tombstones.(2) In July, returning from vacation, stopped in Rowan Co., KY for one day.(3) In October, returned to Harlan, KY for three days.In addition to these field trips, there was much research done at home via the internet.I'm very careful about using data obtained from the internet.Unless it's from a state or federal database, it must be confirmed by other sources for it to be considered reliable.
Cemetery Records – We now have cemetery records of 1,173 Coldiron descendants, showing the name of the cemetery, town, county, and state in which they are buried.These are in 31 states and two foreign countries: AL-3, AR-4, AZ-3, CA-11, CO-17, CT-2, FL-8, IA-2, ID-1, IL-1, IN-26, KS-15, KY-501, MD-3, MI-11, MO-58, MT-8, NC-125, NE-9, NM-5, NY-1, OH-156, OK-31, OR-18, PA-5, TN-10, TX-97, UT-3, VA-25, WA-4, WV-8, Canada-1, France-1.Whenever visits can be made to cemeteries, photos are taken of tombstones and placed in photo albums to share with family members.
