Coldiron Family Genealogy
December 2012 Update
Greetings once again to all family members. We hope your family has had a happy and successful year, full of life's blessings and good health, and eagerly awaits the New Year.We have been doing these annual updates since 2002 and found it's a good way to convey a lot of information across many of our families and keep everybody up to date.I realize this is not all the family news that has happened, but it's what I've been able to learn and pass to you.
Coldiron Family Genealogy book (Second Edition) – This book was published in November 2009 and has been very well received by families who have purchased it.We appreciate your positive comments. The book integrates all the records in the 1998 first edition with the new material compiled from 1998-2009.The new book is 1226 pages, bound with a durable hard cover, 8.5x11 inches in size, and is fully indexed. It contains 4100 Family Group Records, 2443 Census Records of 1023 families, and 1550 Cemetery Records.Family notes and stories are integrated with the Family Group Records so the information on a family is all in one place. There are 14,600 Coldiron descendants in the book.It contains all we know about Coldiron families after many, many years of research.
The books are still available for purchase.Cost is $59.00 per book including mailing.Just send a personal check or money order to me and I'll mail your book the next day.I can also drop ship them to anyone you choose. They make great Christmas, birthday, graduation and marriage gifts for that special family member.
Current Genealogy Activities – With the publication of the updated Coldiron book, my genealogy activities have decreased almost to a maintenance role.Over the past 25 years, research to compile new families and information has been exhaustive, with repeated trips to major research facilities and libraries throughout the United States, and many field trips to the Coldiron populated counties of Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Virginia, and West Virginia.Detailed reviews of new state and federal databases on-line over the past 12 years have provided much new information, and has allowed quality reviews of data previously obtained verbally from family members.I'm not suggesting we've obtained all the information out there, but we have much of it and are now at the point of diminishing returns. So currently the efforts are to compile new information received and integrate it with the current Coldiron database, and to answer queries about the family as they are received.Over the next two years, the major activity will be to review and compile the 1940 census data as described below.
Family Reunions – There continues to be great interest in family reunions. That's probably because Coldiron is a relatively small family, and most cousins I've met have known few Coldirons outside their immediate family. Attending a reunion is a wonderful way to meet new cousins, catch up on all the family news, and share photos and family stories. Pages 1151 and 1152 of the updated Coldiron book summarize our Coldiron reunions held regularly.Check them out, and attend one in 2013 if you can. You'll have fun and meet cousins you didn't know you had. There were several reunions held in 2012:(1) the annual reunion at our house in Masaryktown, FL on 3 March. We had 39 attendees, including nine first-timers, from eight states. We hope many of you can join us in 2013 on Saturday, 2 March.(2) the annual reunion on Father's Day (17 June) in London, KY.(3)the Coldiron-Brewer-Williamson family reunion was held at Greenbriar State Forest over 4th of July weekend.Attendance was down a bit at this usually well attended reunion because of very bad weather.(4) our annual reunion at Lake Seneca, NY on 22 July, hosted by Hayward & Beverly Coldiron.(5) Harlan KY reunion was held on 8 September, and was again well attended.Always exciting to come back to Harlan, since all of us have deep roots there. Thanks to Dave, Ginger and Mike for getting it together.(6) The Coldiron-Faulkner family held their reunion in Hazel Green, KY in mid-summer.
1940 Census Records – Any of us doing genealogy research has waited patiently for the 1940 census records, which became available on 1 April 2012.Census records are privacy protected for 72 years, so this is the first time we've been able to view our ancestral families and where they lived since 1930.The 1940 census records were not available for search on the genealogy databases until about July of this year.Since then, I've been reviewing the 1940 records state-by-state, and integrating this new data into the 1790-1930 census records we had already compiled. The 1790-1930 census records are included in the updated Coldiron book mentioned above on pages 892-1104.A gross search of the new 1940 database shows 755 Coldirons living in 33 states.(Note:This includes only the Coldiron surname; there are hundreds more Coldiron descendants and relatives with allied surnames from marriages. These allied families will also be researched and compiled.)In order, the five most populated states with Coldirons in 1940 were KY, OH, TX, CA, and OK.These five states contain 67% of the Coldirons in 1940.I hope to complete this 1940 census review and compilation by mid-2014.If you have a question about the status of one of your ancestral families in 1940, I would be glad to research that and provide the information to you.
Note:In the following marriage, birth and death records, s/o = son of, d/o = daughter of, w/o = wife of, h/o = husband of.In the deaths, name in parenthesis is maiden name, number in parenthesis is age at death. The last two years are reported due to delays in getting some of the information.

Questions About Your Family, or the entire Coldiron Family? One of the things I enjoy most is getting those phone calls that sometimes begin:"Do you have anything on my grandfather Taylor Coldiron from West Virginia?"Invariably I do, for we now have most Coldirons born before 1950 in the database.Much of the joy in genealogy is sharing information with other family members, and helping them learn of their ancestry and history. If we can help you, give us a call or send an e-mail.
George C. Scott (the actor who played Gen. Patton) -- Did you know George Campbell Scott was a Coldiron descendant? His g-g-grandmother was Margaret Coldiron of Lee County, VA.See page 238 in the Coldiron book for more family details. His connection was confirmed in February 2005 e-mail messages from his daughter Vicki Lewis.
