John: I have read with interest your various postings regarding your Grayson County Coles. I am working on Mathew Cole, who is listed in the 1794 Grayson County Personal Prop Tax List. Mathew was born about 1774. Around 1779, he moved to Lee County, VA, where he married a Katherine. He had Katherine had about 12 or so children. Among the boys were John, Charles and James. Most of the family eventually moved to Kentucky. In the 1850 Owsley Co., KY, census, Mathew and Katherine are listed. Interestingly, Mathew states that he was born in Maryland. Recently, I found a will dated 1826 of a John Cole recorded in Hawkins County, TN. This will leaves everything to his wife Margaret (our John had a wife named Margaret). The will also refers to John's brother James (our John had a brother James). Finally, the will refers to John's grandfather Joseph, who had bought some property from John in Washington County, VA. If this will is our John's will, we now have Mathew's father: Joseph Cole. Since you have been working on Grayson County, can you tie a Mathew Cole to your George? I believe those Joseph Coles in Grayson were from Maryland, so this connection seems to fit with Mathew's statement that he was born in Maryland. I hope we can help each other.
