I have recently researched the vital records of Westerly, Hopkinton, & Richmond, RI -- all were part of Westerly back in the days of Francis the immigrant. The immigrant Francis was in Westerly by 1693.He and his wife were baptised as adults, along with a number of other adult settlers of Westerly, in the Sabbatarian Church in 1698 -- this is NOT the baptism date of their son Francis as the Sabbatarians did not perform infant baptisms and the baptism clearly refers to Francis' wife. The Sabbatarians were already in Westerly in 1698 but still answered to the church in Newport, so it is likely that Francis was never even a resident of Newport, as is also often claimed. The immigrant and family settled just north of today's village of Shannock, in the modern town of Richmond, then still part of Westerly. The land records are clear on this.
Francis, Jr., was almost certainly the oldest son and it was Francis' son Francis, "JR", who married Hannah Bailey as several of us have assumed must be the case. It seems Francis, Jr., inherited the Shannock homestead.
The "book" is just plainly WRONG for the first couple generations.
I have a lot of vital record info -- contact me at JamesHGibbs@aol.com......
