Susan Ann WEST, dau. of James West and Nancy Hawes, md. 1852 to Gilbert Commeaux, son of Gilbert Commeaux and Constance Kleinpeter). Wit: P. A. Stokes, Francis A. Kleinpeter, H. R. Graham, Stephen Roberts and John Hawes.
For the baptism of their children Susan was called Mary Ann West. Either the marriage had her name incorrect, or perhaps she joined the Catholic church and was renamed a Biblical name???
Gilbert was b. about 1830 and Mary Comeaux (per the 1860 census) was born about 1834.
In the 1850 census Gilbert age 19 was living with Stephen Roberts (one of the witnesses at the marriage) and Constance Roberts (evidently his mother had remarried). They were living next door to Margaret Haws 55 SC and John Haws 26, this was the only John Haws in the 1850 census of East Baton Rouge so must be the one who witnessed the marriage. Margaret may have been the widow of William Hawes who was a near neighbor of David Hawes in the 1830 census. It is not clear which James WEST was Susan/Mary's father, but one was living among these Hawes in that census.
Does anyone have anything to help me with these people?
