I have been searching for the parents of my gg grandmother, Malinda Elizabeth Cook for many years.
This is what I know: Malinda was b. MS 8/10/1841 MS
I believe that she had a brother, William Carl Cook William was b. April 1845 MS
Both Malinda and William has children with the names: Eleanor (Nellie) Charles Frederick
I think that the family may have been of German origin (the names William, Carl/Charles, Frederick).
I cannot find these people before Malinda marries Thomas Collins in Doniphan Co., KS in 1858. William is living with Thomas and Malinda in the 1860 Census of Atchison Co., KS.
Malinda married a staunch free-state man in Thomas Collins, and Thomas and William both served in the Union army from Kansas.
I believe that Malinda and William may have been orphans. I have seen many records for both of them post 1858, and they both consistently state that they are from Mississippi, but they never state where in Mississippi. On Malinda's death certificate, her parents names are listed as "unknown", and in Census records the place of birth for the parents for both Malinda and William state "unknown" or "USA."
Thomas and Malinda's two eldest children were deaf. I had assumed that they had a childhood illness that left them deaf, but recently discovered that those children had children who were also deaf. It therefore seems likely that the these children were congenitally deaf. Perhaps they had some cousins back in Mississippi who were also deaf?
