William Cooke and Joane Roper were most likely married in Virginia between September 25, 1663 and April 9, 1665.A Jone Roper was claimed as a headright by Roger Williams on September 25, 1663 in a land patent for 350 acres on the North side of Carolina River [Albemarle Sound, North Carolina].

On April 9, 1665, William Cooke and his wife Joane, daughter of Hugh Roper of Burnham, Somerset, England appointed George Stort of Bristol as their attorney to receive from Hugh Roper, brother of Joane Roper, any legacy left to her by her father.

Know all men by these presents that I William Cook having marryed Joane one of the Daughters of Hugh Roper of Burneham in the County of Somersett doe make, ordeyn, and Constitute my loveing friend Mr. George Stort of Bristoll my true and lawfull attorney to demand and receive of my Wife’s Brother Hugh Roper or any other person therein concerned the Legacy left and bequeathed to my said wife by her sd. father in his last will and Testmt., and in case the said Legacy be not paid upon demand to my said attorney, I the said William Cook doe hereby impower him to arrest, implead, and to the utmost of the Law to prosecute my Wife’s said Brother or any other in the said Legacy concerned and in all things concerning the premises to Act and doe as if I myselfe were personally present and whatsoever my said attorney shall herein lawfully doe I doe hereby rattifie and Confirme. The marriage is also confirmed by a conveyance between William Cooke Jr. and Thomas Woodward for 360 acres upon a branch of the Blackwater River on November 10, 1665, witnessed by Robert Kae and John (x) Thomas.The acknowledgement of the deed dated December 9, 1665 mentions Cooke's wife Joane [Isle of Wight County, VA Wills, Deeds, Etc., Book 1, 1662-1715, p. 63.]
