Thanks for this.I descend from Alfred's brother William.Alfred (and William) were the sons of George Grimston Cookman, another Methodist minister. George was the immigrant Cookman from this direct line.He is mentioned in the diary of Frederick Douglass, was chaplain to the U.S. Senate-- he was lost at sea in the spring of 1843 on the U.S.S. President, the first U.S. steamship to go down on the Atlantic run.He was travelling to visit his father, attend a methodist conference, and I've heard from some sources that he was carrying dispatches to the court of St. James.
George Grimston's father was George Cookman, Mayor of Kingston on Hull, Yorkshire.
