At least two descendants of Isaac Cooley, died in Sedgewick county IL but earlier of Franklin county IN, have had their Y chromosomes tested. They appear to match the descendants of Ensign Benjamin Cooley. I'm not of that family but have several reasons to be interested.
First, Isaac was the son of Thaddeus Cooley who is said to have been born in Goshen, Orange county NY. (How accurate is that information?) This is critical to my own genealogy because my John Cooley (of Stokes county NC) is often said, mistakenly, to have been born in Goshen. If the Isaac Cooley yDNA proves to be representative of all the early Goshen Cooleys then several myths can be dispelled.
Also, I've been trying to place the parents of Reuben Ransom Cooley, at one time of Franklin co IN but later resided in Jackson co. He is believed to have had 7 brothers. My study of the 1860 census, considering that some of those brothers might have still been living at the time, pointed to Franklin co. If I'm right, yDNA among RR Cooley's patrilineal descendants should bear the Benjamin Cooley hallmarks.
Even more elusive is my pursuit of the father of James Cooley b 1808 PA and resided by the 1830s in Columbiana county OH. His descendant's yDNA is a match of my own, which proves that we are not of the Ensign Benjamin or Samuell (-1729 MD) clans.
Here's a table of some of the known descendants of Jabez Cooley, Isaac's grandfather. The Reuben Cooley who marriedRebecca Rockafeller was not, of course, Reuben Ransom Cooley. There's a wide a spread among Thaddeus Cooley's children indicating he may have had a much larger family. Might Reuben R fit here somewhere? All that is known about the family he was born into (other than the size) is that he had a brother named James and another brother who died at the Battle of New Orleans at the end of the War of 1812.
I'd appreciate any corrections or additions to the following, down to the 4th generation.
