Michele informed me about your theory, but based on the information I have from both my grandparents and the census records, I don't believe there is a connection, b/c of the Ohio birthplace listed on two consecutive census records. There are some Hillyards listed on the same page with the Cooneys on the 1870 Census, so I will be sure to look at this further.
Here is what I have re: Susan Hillyard:
Born: 31 Aug 1833 in Highland County, Ohio Died: 21 Jun 1874 in Marion County, Iowa. Married: to Patrick Cooney, 26 Sep 1853 in Highland County, Ohio
My Grandma and Grandpa Cooney provided me with the birth, marriage and death dates for Susan-I do not have sources to back up these dates.I have not found an obituary which might provide glimpses of the Hillyards, but I am searching for these kind of records, in old newspapers, etc.I am finding that there are a lot of twins on the Cooney side as I am piecing our genealogy together, and Susan could be a twin.(My Dad is a twin).
The census records show that she was born in Ohio...I have an 1850 Census of her in Pennsylvania, but do not believe this is in fact her. I would love to find out about the Hillyards, and would welcome anything you find.
1860 CENSUS Name:Susan Coney Age in 1860:27 Birthplace:Ohio Home in 1860:Marshall, Highland, Ohio Gender:Female Value of real estate:View image Post Office:Marshall Roll:M653_987 Page:239 Year:1860 Head of Household: Patrick Coney Household
(Source: Ancestry.com; 1860 Census; viewed November 7, 2004) Note: Although Cooney is listed Coney-this is them-all of the children, etc. are appropriately accounted for! Rember Patrick was illiterate, and has a thick Irish accent which might explain why the Census taker wrote this wrong.
1870 CENSUS Name:Susan Cooney Age in 1870:39 Estimated Birth Year:1830 Birthplace:Ohio Home in 1870:Bluff Creek, Monroe, Iowa Race:White Gender:Female Value of real estate:View Image Post Office:Albia Roll:M593_412 Page:308 Image:125 Year:1870
(Source: Ancestry.com; 1870 Census; viewed November 28, 2004) - - - why are HILLYARDS (Thomas Head of Household) listed on same page of 1870 Census?
Good luck!Let me know if I can be of additional assistance.
