John Harding 'G.D.' Cooper, 90, of Newport, TN, passed
away Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in Greeneville, Greene
He was born November 26, 1920, in Cocke Co TN, a son of
the late Gus David and Mollie Lovell Cooper.
John retired from Wall Tube Metal Products Co. and was a
lifelong farmer, continuing to work on his farm until
declining health in recent months prevented his doing so.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary
Clark Cooper; brothers, Creston Cooper, Charles Kermit
Cooper, and Clayton Cooper; and sisters, Mary Cooper
Hurst, Edna Cooper Taylor, Christine Cooper Gregg, and
Margaret Cooper Strickland.
He is survived by four children and their spouses,
Charlene and Norman O'Dell and Roger and Jalaa, all of
Unicoi, TN, William 'Bill' Cooper, of Murfreesboro, TN,
and Michael and Nora, of Greeneville, TN; grandchildren
and spouses, Melissa (Cooper) and Byron Reece, of Johnson
City, TN, Robert Cooper, of Knoxville, TN, Virginia
(O'Dell) and Mike Mercer, of Ooltewah, Stephanie Cooper,
of Knoxville, TN, and David Cooper and Taylor Cooper, both
of Greeneville, TN; great-grandchildren, Amy and Andrew
Mercer, of Ooltewah, and Kaitlyn and Max Reece, of Johnson
City, TN; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.,
Thursday, September 15. 2011, at Manes Funeral Home, with
the funeral service following at 7 p.m., in the chapel.
The Rev. Tony Rutherford will officiate.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted
Friday, September 16, 2011, at 11 a.m., in Union Cemetery
in Newport, TN. Pallbearers will be Robert Cooper, David
Cooper, Frankie Cooper, Jim Linderman, Mark Hill, Dale
Hartsell, and Byron Reece.
