Copley means a hilltop clearing. There are several places called Copley in England but I believe that the one near Halifax in West Yorkshire gave rise to most Copleys in the North of England. In the mid 13th century a Hugh de Copley, son of Thomas Talvace was given land there. The family seems to have spread out very quickly, there were lots of Copleys in the 1379 poll tax for Yorkshire.
I have Copleys in two branches of my family, one from Halifax, Cleckheaton, Kirkheaton and Dalton and another from Royston and Clayton West.
