I came across the Ilfracombe Copp's quite early on in my researches so have lots of notes on them and their associates including the Lake's etc. However it has taken a long while to work back through the generations and now I have made a connection with the Torrington Copp's. My husband's great great grandfather wasJohn Copp born circa 1809 Bideford. He married Grace Mathews and according to the 1841 and 1851 census they were living at Mill Street Torrington. In 1861 they were living in Bideford and they had John's neices Susanna (10) and Mary (25) living with them. The neices were I believe the daughters of Samuel and Elizabeth Copp who were living at the time of the 1851 census in Well Street Torrington. Samuel was a 'carrier/grocer' at that time and I wonder if this was the same Samuel Copp that later had the entry in 'Kelley's Directory 1883' "Samuel Copp & Son, general carriers, mourning coaches and carriages, furniture removers.Agents to London and S.W. Railway - New Street".
As your Copp's originate from Torrington I wonder if you have any information that can help me. Also have you any info on Henry Arthur Copp, in 1883 he was at 37 High Street Ilfracombe and was a naturalist and tobaconist. This particularly intrigues me as my husband is a professional naturalist.
Would love to hear from you Tom with any info you may have also if you have any gaps in your history I may have notes that may be relevant.
All good wishes from a damp and sunny Clevedon, Somerset
