Coppedge-Mayes-Lunsford 1700 VA

By Valerie Burd August 08, 2002 at 04:17:11

Can anyone tell me anything about the connection between the Coppedges and Mayes in early Northumberland Co, VA.Henry Mayes married Mary Gaskins, daughter of Thomas Gaskins Sr., and then an Elitia (Lydia) who may have been a Basye. He died by 1703.The Coppedges appear to have been neighbors.John the surveyor appears to end up as an administrator of Henry's will in 1713, and re-enters it after it is burned in a courthouse fire.Did he marry Elisha? There is a record of an Elisha Mayes dying in 1708. Or did he marry Henry's daughter Elizabeth? There is a connection also between the Mayes family and the William Fletcher family. When William Fletcher (the son of William Fletcher, joiner, and Diana -- Henry and Mary had a daughter named Diana) dies, leaving widow Elizabeth and son Mayes Fletcher, Mayes Fletcher in 1717 picks William Coppedge, son of William and brother to John and Charles and James, as his guardian. This Mayes Fletcher goes on to marry an Anne.I have several later Mayes-Coppedge deeds, and Mayes-Lundsford deeds, and in Prince George Co VA a Jesse Lundsford is interacting with the Mayes family there in the mid 1700s.Any help out there? Thanks.
