SPRINGFIELD - Eleanor Susan Copper, 89, died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the River Birch Senior Living facility in Springfield.
She was born August 3, 1921, in New Holland, IL, the daughter of Louis and Emma Meta Matilda "Tillie" Sieb Lohrenz. She married H.E. "Cop" Copper, a New Holland boy who grew up down the street, on Nov. 3, 1943, in Murray, Ky., during Cop's U.S. Navy training. He preceded her in death May 2, 1995.
She is survived by two sons, Ken (wife, Linda) of San Marcos, Calif., and Steve (wife, Bre Linstromberg) of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Kelly Copper (husband Pavol Liska) of New York City, Katie (husband, Doug) Diepholz of San Diego, and Walter Copper of Jacksonvillle; and one great grandson, Daniel Diepholz. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Louis Lohrenz (surviving wife, Shirley, of Mason City) and a brother-in-law, Robert Copper (surviving wife, Lois, of Cincinnati).
Eleanor graduated from New Holland High School and Lincoln Christian College. She taught in a one-room school house in the early 1940s. After her marriage, she was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker as the family moved from Illinois, to Michigan, to Iowa before returning to Springfield in 1971. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Springfield where she was both a deacon and an elder and active in her church circle. She was involved in the PEO most of her adult life and a longtime member of PEO chapter HU in Springfield. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf and the organ. She was an avid reader and loved baking cinnamon rolls for a wide circle of friends at Christmas time. After caring for her husband through years of his dementia, she became an eager volunteer in the community, helping at the Sangamon Auditorium, Memorial Hospital and the Lawrence Learning Center, among others.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with The Reverend David A. Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Grove Cemetery in New Holland, IL.
