I work for the Portrait Miniature department atPhillips Auctioneers, London. In our forthcoming 'Connoiseur's Cabinet' sale on 10th April 2001 we have a group of miniatures entitled 'The Coram Family'. This includes a miniature of Thomas Coram, who established the Foundling Hospital in London and together with William Hogarth created the first public art gallery in England.
This is one of only three known contemporary portraits of Thomas Coram and we have been assisted with the cataloguing by The Foundling Museum. We believe the other miniatures are of his wife, Eunice Waite, his brother, William Coram, William's wife and their daughter Mary James (nee Coram). Four of the miniatures are by an unknown English artist, circa 1720, the portrait of Mary James is attributed to Arthur Devis circa 1740.
The group of miniatures are lot 614 in the sale and have an estimate of £3000-5000. If you would be interested in receiving a copy of the cataloguing and an image of the miniatures please contact me at email@example.com . They are also on our website www.phillip-auctions.com
