I have found an old newspaper article from Washington, Pa. featuring the history of Rev. Jesse Franklin Core, Jr. on the occasion of his silver wedding anniversary in 1896. I think I've figured out the mystery, and surprisingly, it doesn't have anything to do with Henry Core. Henry, while he did have a son named Jesse, is not the father of Jesse Franklin Core, according to this article. In the piece, they list Jesse's grandfather as John Christian Core of Maryland, a son of Christian Core of Hagerstown who ran the Old Red Hotel and raised the Liberty pole there during the Revolution. Now I know where that family history comes from.
The confusion seems to have arisen from the fact that Jesse F. Core Sr. is listed as living in Fayette Co. in 1840. Plus, the children of Christian and Fannie are numerous and not well-named. Also, newspaper articles are notoriously unreliable.
For example, though Jesse Sr. (born in Virginia, according to this article) is listed as the son of John Christian of Maryland, Christian's dates don't match up with this newspaper's history. Christian Core, supposedly the grandson of immigrant Michael Kohr through his son John Christian, was born in 1768 and his children were all born around the time Jesse Franklin would have been born, 1799. It is impossible to fit another generation (the imaginary John Christian generation) into this tree. Which again, takes me back to where the other family genealogists have been struggling for decades - is Jesse the son of Christian/John Christian Core/Kohr or Henry Core of Fayette? Or maybe he'sHenry Core's brother John's son instead (since Virginia could refer to either Virginia or West Virginia). But that last one is pure hypothesis on my part. I'll probably have to go back through any and every John Christian's wills to sous out the info I need.
Note that this information predates Earl L. Core's misguided but thorough 1937 book "The Chroicles of Core" by about 60 years, which lends some credence to it.
Anyways, my head hurts, so I think I'll go back to my day job for a while, and leave the Core tangle to its gloomy mess in the corner. Anyone willing to shed some light on this newly rediscovered information? I'd really appreciate it.
