My gggrandmother was Deborah Ann Costten, or Costter, married William Garvin 1832 and recorded in an old Family Bible.She was born in S.C. 1819, on Atlanta, Georgia 1880 census where she died in 1893. No prior info. I have found John and Lott Costen in 1840 Census in Washington Co., Ga.; Elsey and Thomas Coston in Stewart; John (also 1850) and Jackson in Forsyth; and Kinchin Costonin Baker Counties. A Travis Costton in Green County in 1850. There was a Francis Costen in Jefferson County in the 1820 and 1830 census.Lee County History shows buried at Thundering Springs Cemetery, John Coston, Co. D. Cobbs, Georgia Legion, CSA.no date. Also other Coston burials. "Georgia Archives Early Marriages" Richmond Co.,Ga.A. M. Coster to Mary Gullege January 7, 1819.
I have info from an Alabama Costen line that states the name was originally "Constant" and it was changed about the time of the Revolution.I have considered the variations in spelling.Thomas Causton born in England in 1692 came to Georgia with General James Oglethorpe.He was chief magistrate and storekeeper in Savannah until 1738, at which time, I understand the Trustees fired him.I trust I have given you some information which you perhaps do not know.If you have any clues to my Selenah Ann, please let me know.Thanks, Ginny in Georgia
