Phillip Cotter was born in Drogheda, Meath Ireland in approx 1833. (possible name variant is Philip)
He married Catherine Gorry in Kells, Meath Ireland. Her father was Karl Gorry.
In 1855 they set sail aboard the James Fernie on 24th October for Moreton Bay in Queensland Australia, landing 24th Jan 1856 where they lived for a year. It appears they came over with a baby girl but I have not found records that the child survived the trip or quarrantine. They then moved to New South Wales and settled in the Redfern area.
I found records of a James and Brigette Cotter arriving in Moreton bay under a year before Phillip and Catherine, bringing me to believe that this could have been a brother of Phillips. But have not had the resources to search Queenslands archives as yet. As I know that familys sent on another family member and brought the others or told others of the area etc.
They had several children 3 of which died, in order that I am aware of are: John, Margaret, Edward, James, Rose and Mary. We think there was a Nicholas as well and we have not found any record of the third son.
Phillip died in Hamilton NSW in 1914 and is buried at Sandgate, Catherine is yet to be found.
James (born 1866) went on to marry Laura Elizabeth Clarke(born 1870 bombay).
Edward I think went on to marry an Ameila and have 3 sons.
All cotters to this point remained in sydney.
I'm interested in finding any relatives or information of Phillips family and father who was also named Phillip from Ireland. Any brothers, sisters etc. His mother is shown as 'unkown' on his death certificate transcription.
I've come to a brick wall up to this point!
If any of these names ring a bell or you know of anyone researching this lot of Cotters. Please feel free to contact me.
