Ken,
The time-frame I have heard mentioned was early 18th century.I am unconvinced by this and suspect if there is any truth in the story it may well have been earlier.I can't recall off-hand the earliest entry for Coulls in the Parish Records hereabouts, but the Rathven one (in which Buckie is located) only starts in 1690 anyway. And, in many cases, the Coulls here were Roman Catholic.
At the risk of offending someone on here, I would be extremely sceptical of anyone who claims that they could trace the Coulls back in Banffshire for 1000 years. If they are from the Buckie area, this would be very difficult as there are no surviving written church records earlier than 1600 in the Parish of Rathven.
I have extensively researched the Coulls in Port Gordon and together with a friend am working on the various Buckie ones (from one family of which I descend). My friend, who is meticuluous in his approach, has got very bogged down with the sheer number of Coulls hereabouts.
I am aware of some intermarrying between Banffshire and Angus. As you say movement over this distance was difficult. It was, however, much easier and much more common in fishing or at least coastal communities, where the shipping trade made contact easier. It was far easier to travel the 160 miles by sea between Buckie and Ferryden than ever it was to travel the 80 or so miles by land.
Best wishes,
Peter
