Edward A. Corbiere
Edward Arthur Corbiere, 86, of Chalmers Street, a resident of Wingate at East Longmeadow, formerly of Turnpike Road, Montague, MA, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center following a period of illness.
He was born in Montague, MA on January 10, 1923, to Arthur and Delia (Dion) Corbiere and attended the former St. Anne's Parochial School, later Montague Public Schools and graduated from Turners Falls High School in the Class of 1941. While at TFHS, Edward was active in sports, served as the Captain of the Varsity Football Team and was President of his graduating class.
Edward entered military service during WWII on June 30, 1943 and served honorably in the United States Navy until his discharge on December 25, 1945. He attained the rate of Machinist Mate 2nd Class and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal
with 6 stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars, serving aboard the Light Cruiser the USS Miami.
Upon his return from active military duty, he went to work for a Holyoke based paper company, later accepting a position with the former Millers Falls Paper Company and retired in 1978 from the Strathmore Paper Company.
He was a professional sports enthusiast, who enjoyed following the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Bruins, the Celtics and the New England Patriots. He was an avid golfer and former member of Thomas Memorial Golf and Country
Club in Turners Falls, MA and enjoyed bowling as well. He served the Town of Montague for several years, as a town meeting member in precinct 3. He was currently a communicant of Holy Cross Parish, in Springfield, MA and
formerly of Our Lady of Peace in Turners Falls, MA.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, the former Mary Olive Leonard, whom he married in St. John's Church on June 14, 1947. He leaves in addition to his devoted wife, his loving daughters: Mary Pat Millett of Purchase, N.Y., as well as her husband Mark and their children Jeffrey and
Megan; Jane D. Virgilio of Springfield, MA and her children Zachary and Jacob. Additionally Edward leaves his loving sister-in-law and her husband; Kathleen and Raymond Watroba of Windsor CT, his brother-in-law, Francis Leonard of West Hartford CT, his devoted friends Cecile and Maurice Fugere
of Turners Falls, MA, and several nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his two sisters, Cecile and Doris, and his brother, Raymond.
Edward's family also acknowledges with gratitude the loving care provided by the C-Wing staff at Wingate in East Longmeadow.
Funeral Services Monday, March 30 th, 2009 with a dismissal service to take place from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 14 Prospect Street, Turners Falls, MA to be followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Peace Parish, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, with Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor, as the celebrant. Rites of committal will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, with full military honors to be observed with a detachment of the United States Navy in attendance.
