Cranston & Whitcraft Marriages
We believe that there is some confusion between the marriages of James Whitcraft Jr. and his brother Henry. Both men married Cranston sisters in Guernsey Co., OH. It has been stated that James married Mary Cranston and Henry married Matilda Cranston. But, according to the 1850 Federal Census for Oxford Twp., Guernsey Co., OH. Henry's wife is named Mary. On Ancestry.com they list her as Marg, but when looked at the name is Mary. Mary's birth date fits the known birth date for Mary Cranston. James Whitcraft is not on the 1850 census, but Matilda Cranston Whitcraft is living back with her parents, Thomas and Nancy Commons Cranston. Matilda remarries William Bircher bef 1870. We believe that James Whitcraft Jr married Matilda Cranston on Sept 9 1841 Guernsey Co., OH and died bef 1850. Henry married Mary "Polly" Cranston on August 15 1831 Guernsey Co., OH.
On the 1850 census living with Henry and Mary is Henry's father, James age 90 bn in Ireland.
