If you ever find the source for the death of Lucy CRARY wife of Amos WITTER, I'd appreciate the source. Their dau.Lucy CRARY b. 23 July 1797 d. unknown; m. Oliver Cromwell MARSHALL.They married in Westfield, MA. Could their daughter Lucy CRARY have been the Lucy who died in Hartford, CT? Their daughter: Lucy Ann Charlotte MARSHALL m. William Bradley CARRIER. William Bradley Carrier died in Harford, CT. I need to check the census for Oliver Cromwell Marshall to see where he lived in 1840 and if they have a female in her 70's living with them, this could be Lucy Crary Marshall's mother Lucy Crary WITTER.
Are you a direct ancestor of Lucy CRARY and Amos WITTER? They are my 3rd great grandparents.
My information for the death ofAMOS WITTER 12 Oct 1808 in New York State came from Harold John WITTERthe author of the book The Descendants of William Witter and Hannah Churchman of Lynn, MA by Harold John Witter, Gateway Press, Inc. Baltimore, 1991.
The following is the letter from Harold John WITTER:
Harold J. Witter P.O. BOX 371 Skaneateles, NY 13152-0371
October 25, 1997
Thank you for the additional information that you sent to me on Albert A. Witter's descendants.
You asked about Amos WITTER Sr.'s death date.I received a lot of my information from a Donald D. WITTER of Chicopee, MA.He did extensive research on New England WITTER families when he was looking for his WITTER ancestry. He finally found his line but had collected lots of material on other lines. He let me borrow the material and gave me permission to print it.I asked him where he got some of his information but he couldn't remember. He did not state many resources in his material. He did put a source as the "Columbus Sentinal Newspaper"and this is probably where he got the death date for AMOS WITTER, Sr.He probably found it in Worcester, MA at the American Antiquarian Library. They have the best selection of early newspapers in New England and the"Columbus Sentinal"was a New England paper.
A friend of mine was looking at Microfilm of Washington County, New York by Asa Fitch (call # LN 48 W27 Bf) and listed were convicts of Washington Co. as noticed in the Northern Post 1807 -- June circuitAMOS WITTER -- counterfeiter who was sentenced to life. The Northern Post is probably a Washinton Co. newspaper....
