I appreciate very much your taking the trouble to reply regarding the origins of the the village of Crates in PA.
Would it be too much to ask further about what date the first post office was established there and the name of Crates adopted.Presumably BEFORE postage stamps. Also, do you know the approx population of Crates now?Are there still Crate(s) there?
The implication of your description is that Philip Grett changed his name to Crate. Are you aware of his origins and when he arrived in US, and what influences caused the name change and when? Are you a descendant?
I am heavily involved in trying to identify all Crates anywhere now, and of course their antecedents, but I have tended not to get involved with the name Crate, except where mistaken exchanges take place from time to time.If you have any knowledge and information to exchange pertinent to this, I should welcome a dialogue.
I'm not sure if this forum gives enough info for direct communication but I would be very happy if you want to email direct.I am John Crates, email is 'email@example.com'.
