William Silas Crayne was a brother to my grandfather Charlie Crayne (24 Dec 1874- 4 May 1957). They were both sons of Jacob Jordan Crayne(not Gordon) and Lucy Harris. In researching our Crayne line I acquired the marriage license of William Silas Crayne and Martha Belle Ashby. They were married at the residence of Rev. D. W. Ashby, Lasater Precinct, Hamilton County, Illinois on 6 June 1879. On the marriage return William Silas is listed as a farmer, age 21, born in Crittenden County, Kentucky, the son of Jordan Crayne and Lucy Harris. (Jacob Jordan is his name as listed on a daughter's marriage record, in most other records he is listed as J. J. Crayne). Martha Belle Ashby is listed in her marriage record as age 17, born in Hamilton County, Illinois, the daughter of Jonathan Ashby and Eliza Jane Cottingham. (If you'd like a copy of the marriage record just ask and I'll scan and e-mail one to you). Jacob Jordan Crayne and Lucy Harris were married in Crittenden County, Kentucky on 8 Apr 1852.(Crit. Co. marriage rec.) Jacob Jordan Crayne was born in Virginia (prob. Pittsylvania County) about 1830. (Shown as age 30 in 1860 Census Crit. Co., KY. and age 55 in 1880 Census White Co., IL.). He died before 1900 as Lucy Harris Crayne is listed as a widow in the 1900 Census of Hamilton Co., IL. Jacob Jordan Crayne was the son of Jacob Crayne and Nancy Deboe. Jacob, b ca 1797 (prob. Pittsylvania County) VA. m. Nancy Deboe in 1820, moved to KY between about 1838 and 1842, and died in 1881 in Caldwell or Crittenden County. Nancy Deboe Crayne was born in VA. 26 Sep 1799, died 1 Mar 1865, buried Dollar Cemetery near Fredonia, KY. (My source for these death dates was secondary, and she wasn't clear on her source so I can't be sure I have it right). Anyway, onward, Jacob Crayne was the son of Conrad Crain.
