I see some of you are researching Creamers in Ohio and thought someone might be interested in the following, from "Recollections of A. Hathaway, of Canal Winchester," found on pp. 248-252 of A Complete History of Fairfield County, Ohio, 1795-1876, by Hervey Scott (yes Hervey, not Harvey), publ. Columbus OH 1877.
A. = Almanzar Hathaway, son of Edward Hathaway, who came to Ohio from Virginia by 1805, settled in Violet Twp, Fairfield Co.In this memoir, Almanzar names people who were his father's early Fairfield Co neighbors, ca. 1812-1815, including Michael Creamer and Adam, Jacob and George Creamer.
The memoir includes the following on p. 248:
"Old Mother Creamer, wife I believe of Michael, was familiarly known all through the country as 'Granny Creamer.'This was an appellation given to certain old ladies in the early days of the country, who performed duties now belonging to doctors. The title has become obsolete. . . ."
"At the age of four years, he [Almanzar] was accompanying his mother to the cabin of Mr. Tallman. They discovered a large black-snake near the path, and his mother having an instinctive dread of Eve's betrayer, told him to stay and watch it while she went to fetch Granny Creamer to kill it.Mrs. Creamer was in sight of them, in the act of grubbing up bushes in the clearing. She came and killed the snake, greatly to the relief of Mrs. Hathaway, and then returned to her grubbing-hoe."
Almanzar was b. 1806, so the incident with the snake would have happened about 1810.
I have found the following possible Creamers in the 1820 census of Fairfield Co, all living in Violet Twp:
p. 99: Michael Creamer, age 26-45 Adam Creamer, age 26-45 Andw. Creamer, age 45 and over Ludwick Creamor, age 26-45 Phillip Creamor, age 26-45 John Creamor, age 26-45
p. 100: Michael Crem?, age 45 and over Thomas Craner?, age 26-45 Jacob Craner?, age 26-45
I'm a Hathaway descendant, trying to figure out where in Virginia my Edward Hathaway lived before he removed to Ohio, and so am checking out his neighbors on the chance that they may have made the trip west together. If anyone knows where these Fairfield Co OH Creamers came from, I would be very glad to know.
