Notes for David Crews:
Subj: Crews family of VA
Date: 3/22/00 8:53:27 PM Eastern Standard Time
Recently I've been researching a difficult family in VA and ran across several Crews.I noted them because I am reportedly descended from a John Crews of Bedford County, VA.
I don't have too much on John Crews of Bedford County, VA but reportedly He and his brother David are the sons of a David Crews and Mary Stanley who were married in New Kent County VA in 1733/1734.David & John moved together to Madison County, KY.Here is were it gets a little sticky. It is assumed by several genealogists that Thomas Crew Sr.(my 5th great grandfather), (b 1760 VA) who was married to a Dicy Blackwell in Madison Co., KY in 1801 is the son of John Crew of Bedford County, VA, because David's will fails to list a Thomas.
Now to the facts. On the Lunnenburg tithe books I first came across a Richard & John Crews living together in 1750, then again in 1751. By 1752 there is only a John Crews. The next tithe book I checked was 1764 which listed a John & David Crew living together and a John Crewjr., nearby. Also a Richard Crews, Josiah Crews, Joseph Crews.By 1769 there is a Josiah, Peter and Richard Crews.1772 lists a Josiah & Richard Crews.Unfortunately I skipped around so the missing dates likely have Crews listed as well. The 1704 VA tax list shows a John Crew living in Northampton County.
My information traces the line back from David (md 1733/34) to father John and Grandfather John. By the way I am related to the Crews family through Aramintia Crews (b 1818 MO) who married Hampton Carson (Kit's brother).
To be honest I haven't yet taken the time to sort all of this out.I will try to reconcile all the different data and your query and see if everything fits.I have a feeling it won't ha ha.

David2 CREW (John1) married in Friends Mtg. House, Hanover Co, VA. Mary STANLEY, 1733/34-11-9, dt. of John STANLEY. This John STANLEY is not the son of Thomas STANLEY who came to Charles City County by 1674 with John CREW. Thomas STANLEY had three brothers who came to Virginia at different times. John STANLEY would be a younger brother of Thomas. The Charles City County Order Book gives John STANLEY as arriving in 1677.David married a second time, 4 Aug. 1754, Mary LADD McGAHEA (MAGEE). She was the relect or widow of Samuel McGAHEA of Hanover County and the daughter of William LADD and Huldah BINFORD.
David contributed toward the building of Cedar Creek Mtg House in 1739 and was disowned in 1741 for misconduct. He was living in New Kent County in 1754 and was married at a Friends Meeting House at the Swamp, Hanover County. He was "under care" of Henrico MM in 1758 for child neglect and placed on probation. He was living in Hanover County but a member of Black Creek Mtg in New Kent County when he was disowned 6 May 1758 for neglecting his children. Only two of his children are named in the minutes:
