We have a family mystery. My mother told us that her maternal grandmother's maiden name was Croker. Barbara Ann Croker. Barbara Ann Croker married James J Newborn and is buried at Union Grove Baptist Church in Lithia Springs, Georgia. Her grave stone reads Barbarbey N. Newborn. However, we can find no record of a marriage for Barbara Ann (or Barbarbey or Barbary Ann) Croker but there is a marriage on record in Douglas County Ga. Book A for James J. Newbern and Ann Burson with the date of 8-8-1875. There are other researchers who have Barbara Ann's maiden name as Burson but since my mother said that the name was Croker we have been toiling to find records for that name. I have placed Arabelle Croker in the home of William J. Croker. With them in the home is :
Susan born about 1849 Gilham born about 1853 John born about 1854 Nancy born about 1856 Anna (I have been going on the presumption that this is our Barbara Ann or Barbarbey N) born about 1857 Louisa born about 1861 Dargan born about 1865 born about 1866 Ema Born about 1867
Both W J and Arabelle are also buried at Union Grove Baptist Church. W J Crokers tombstone reads W J Croker, b July 22 1826, d May 17 1898. Arabelle Crokers reads MOTHER, Arabelle Croker, b July 9, 1839, d Dec 9 1911. The Croker plot is next to the Newborn plot.) There is also a grave for Amos Croker whose tombstone reads Amos W Croker, b Sept 11 1832, d Oct 23 1912.
I have found marriage records for Ausborn Burson and Elizabeth A. Demoney on May 19, 1856 in Fulton County Georgia. There is also a record for Ausborn Burson and Elizabeth A Demoney on May 18, 1856 in the Campbell County Book B. Campbell County has been reconfigured and is now part of several modern counties. They would include Fulton, Douglas and others. The marriage we have found for Arabell Burson and William Croker is for 1866. This would have made her 28 at the time of her marriage to William Croker. As my sister pointed out to me, that was old (at the time) for a first marriage.
My question is, does anyone know or know how I would find out if Elizabeth A Demoney married Ausborn Burson and was widowed then remarried William J Croker using her middle name of Arabelle (Elizabeth A. Demoney Burson)on the certificate of marriage? This would really clear up a lot for us IF that is true. If would explain why there is no marriage record for Barbara Ann Croker since, if she is from the first marriage of Arabelle and Auborn Burson, she would indeed have been Barbara Ann Burson but my mother would have assumed that her name was Croker since Barbara Ann's mother had remarried William Croker.
If anyone has taken the time to read this lengthy post and recognizes any of the names mentioned I would love to hear from you as well as thank you for taking the time to read and try to follow these mixed up facts.
