Rebecca Hobbs was born July 10, 1810, at Kingsworthy, Hampshire, daughter of William and Mary Hobbs. On April 28, 1828, at Micheldever, Hampshire, she married Charles Croswell, christened April 20, 1800 at Portsea, Hampshire, son of Charles and Catherine Croswell. They had a number of children and emigrated to Canada in 1843; he died at sea. Her second husband, whose wife also died at sea and by legend on the same boat, was George French (born 1796?) of Northamptonshire with a family. They probably married in Canada; they settled in Peel Township, Wellington County, and had a family of their own.
The three families totalled 24 children and their descendants number in the thousands. Cornelius Croswell (born 7 January 1837) was one of her sons by the first marriage, and Charlotte French (born 23 September 1846) was one of her younger daughters by the second marriage. Their sibling Sophia French (Moore) (born 25 July 1848) is my great-grandmother.
