Cynthia;
I have always wanted to have a conection with the Boston Cunniff's. I had a classmate at The Citadel in Charleston,S.C. a William Cunniff, who was from the Boston area any relation?
My Cunniff came from Bothwell,Lanark, Scotland in 1890. Patrick Francis Cunniff was born there in 1864. He was a blacksmiht in the J&L Steel Mills in Pitsburgh,Pa.
I understand the family was originally from Ireland from the Cork or Roscommon area. In the 1900 US Census the name is spelled "Cuniffe". When I checked out the family in Scotland the spelling was "Cuniff". Patricks father name was also Patrick. The mother Mary Breslow. My grandfather had one brother, Roger, and three sisters, Ellen, Maggie,and Jane all of whom may have come to the States at different times. They may also have family in Birmingham,Al.
The name Cunniff can be spelled in many different ways with the originall translation from Galick meaning "Black Hound". The family may have been gamekeepers.
How far back can you trace the family?
Terry Cunniff
