Our greatgreatgrandfather John Kelly (spelled it Kelley) and wife Winifred Conniff Kelly were born in Ireland in 1816.The 1850 and 1860 census for W Roxbury were full of Kelleys from Ireland.John the immigrant must have had several brothers, but he only had one son, John C, and 2 daughters, Elizabeth b 1845 and Mary Ellen b 1847.He died sometime soon after the 1850 census because he was not in the 1860 census with Winifred and the 3 children.
In 1850 they were living in the household of Mary Conniff, age 76, b Ireland (head) and Wm Conniff age 66.Wm was not the head, and based on the records from St Peter and Paul in Athlone, Mary's husband was George Cunniff so Wm must have been a younger brother of George who must have been dead by 1850.
Great Uncle Arthur did not go back far enough. He said John the immigrant came earlier and then returned for his family.I think that family story referred to one generation earlier; On the same census page in both 1850 and 1860, there is an elder John Kelley, b 1790 IRE, and his wife Mary b 1793 IRE.This must have been the father of our John who married Winifred, and must have been the father of some of the other Kelleys in the same neighborhood. In 1850,John Sr and Mary have 3 grown kids living with them; Elizabeth 25 b MA, Michael 21 b MA, and Edward 18 b MA. What I found in the 1850 census confirms the records in St Peter and Paul in Athlone, Co Roscommon, IRE.Great Uncle Arthur said in his Kelly history that he wrote in 1965, that the Kellys and the Cunniffs came from Athlone. He also said that the Kelly clan originated in the HY Main area of northern Galway and southern Roscommon.

Generation I John Kelly and Winifred Cuniff, b 1816, of Athlone,Co. Roscommon, IRE and Roxbury MA imm. c.1845Winifred died at age 88, c 1904.They came during the potato famine. They might have had children that died in Ireland before they came.
(John Kelley was probably the son of John Kelley, b 1790 Ireland and wife Mary, in the 1850 census with Elizabeth 25, Michael 21, and Edward 18; and Winifred was probably the daughter of George Cunniff and wife Mary Harrington of St Peter and Paul RC Church in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, IRE who had a daughter Winifred b 1816.George m 2nd, Eleanor Kelly)
John died soon after the 1850 census in MA as there were no other children b after 1850 and he was not in the 1860 census with Winifred and the 3 children.
