My information was given to me by another family member and taken from "The History of Nicholas County, WV by William Griffae Brown", p.306-7. The name was originally, to my understanding, German (and hard to understand or spell) and it was Gottleif (sp??) which translates from German as "God's love". The original Cutlips travelled the Rhine branches to the Rhine, from the Rhine to Swizerland and to the sea and came into America through Philadelphia. They came to America from the Palatinate in Germany in the great Mennonite immigration and some of them found their way to what is now Nicholas County, WV. Many Cutlips live in Braxton, Pocahontas and Nicholas Counties in WV. Hope this info helps.
