I am descended from Robert Cutt(s)who married Mary Hoel in Barbadoes. They came to Kittery, Maine, where their daughter Bridget married William Screven.Rev. Screven was convinced to leave Maine due to his Anabaptist preaching, so he took his family and some followers to Charleston, South Carolina. William Screven was a founder of the Southern Baptist Church, and is mentioned in the church histories and in Kittery proceedings of the time. William Screven is buried in Georgetown, S.C.My Great-grandfather was James Douglas Robertson who was a Scottish immigrant who studied in NYC at the Columbia School of Theology. He founded the Second Congregational Church of Danbury, Conn. during the Civil War, and after the war he moved to Bluffton, S.C., where he started a school for newly freed slaves. There he married Anna Richardson Guerard, a daughter of Alice Screven and Dr. Jacob DeVeaux Guerard, a descendant of French Huguenots. J.D. Robertson is buried in the Guerard plot behind St. Luke's Methodist church on Hwy 170 in Beaufort county, S.C.This family definitely appreciated the religious freedom America offered.
