Yes I am firming up on this - May 2002 - if you can make it. There are a lot of Daffern cousins out there. I met one today Louise Baldock who came down to our Nuneaton Local and Family History Day. Louise's family are in our line. Nuneaton might be the most convenient place as it is in the centre of England and a centre of much Daffern activity. I organised a Croshaw family re-union last year (similar family spread as the Dafferns) and a proposed itinerary comprises of the following -
Meeting place - Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre opposite Chilvers Coton parish church. (a Georgian/Victorian school complete with old desks and furniture - dates back to 1735) arrive 10.30am. Sign in. Displays of Trees, Daffern memorabilia. Tea and Coffee. A brief introduction, browse the NNWFHS bookstall and a buffet lunch laid on by the All Saints tea rooms next door, In the afternoon a coach tour of churches and places associated with the Dafferns (including a stop for afternoon tea - maybe at Arley)duration two hours. Back to the Chilvers Coton Centre. Approx 5pm.
Last year we did this for the Croshaws and 70 turned up from the US, Germany, as well as all over the UK. They are re-booking next June. So we must have got it right.
I'll make the local arrangements, lay on the room, tell the papers to get local Dafferns to turn up, book the buffet, the coach etc. but will need admin help. e.mailing people, collating the bookings etc. acting as treasurer, snail mail box etc. etc.
Chilvers Coton is three miles from M6 motorway, half an hour from the M1, one and half hours from London by train - taxi from Nuneaton station costs four-five pounds - walk 20 minutes. From Birmingham half an hour by train. From Manchester two hours by train. Chilvers Coton is just over one mile from Nuneaton station. Nearest airport - Birmingham, an hour by train or taxi costs twentyfive pounds. Time by road half an hour.
Any dates I should avoid ? but Saturday would be the best day. Because the craft centre adjacent to the Heritage centre is open.
Does this seem OK to you or maybe you would prefer a different itinerary?
