hi, have a fair bit of info. stored away somewhere but basically, the surname Dalglish (or the other 47 variations I found at one point) is based on a combination of two gaelic words describing the area itself (i.e. Upper and Nether Dalgleish in the Ettrick area of Selkikrshire in Scotland). This is a small area of grassy land with a small brook running through it, hence the combination DAL (field) and GLAIS (brook) [not sure of the gaelic spellings - it's been some time].In other words, a direct translation of the surname would be Brookfield. As far as I remember the area was named in the early 14th century so that should be the furthest anyone can go back, if they get that far.One final note, a coat of arms exists with the main image being an opened book resting on a tree stump.I'm afraid I can't remember the motto. sorry.
